In 1977, the United Nations declared the 8th of March as the official UN holiday for women’s rights. After the adoption of Women’s Day by the United Nations, the year 1975 was referred to as ‘International Women’s Year’. The first International Women’s Day was celebrated when Clara Zetkin, a German women’s rights activist tabled the idea of annual Women’s Day to bring a call to action to women’s civil, political and socio-cultural rights. In the United States, 28th February 1909 was declared as ‘Women’s Day’, organized by the Socialist Party of America. It aims to put forward the cause of economic empowerment in women. The theme sheds light on an inclusive society characterized by gender equality. The campaign theme is ‘Inspire Inclusion’. The 2024 International Women’s Day theme is Invest in women: ‘Accelerate progress’. We are never defeated.Women’s rights activists have raised issues concerning women – reproductive rights, gendered pay, sexual harassment, domestic violence, women’s suffrage, and other prevalent issues.
